INNOVATIVE PEDAGOGY IN LPU


In Lovely Professional University curriculum is delivered using an innovative "blended approach".Every teaching department works with the overarching objective of providing quality professional education by:
soliciting state of the art teaching technology and infrastructure
using the most current teaching techniques that fit best with student development needs
prompting students to undertake analytical assignments with ‘hands on’ self learning
training the faculty in contemporary teaching techniques.
Blended Approach includes development of programs and courses based on industry and academics inputs, classroom teaching coupled with web based contents, application based pedagogy, continuous assessment(CA), organized feedback from students and improvisation on teaching techniques.
At LPU a variety of teaching methods are use which help to enhance best of the practices and help students to derive the best of the learning from their programs and courses. These methods are:
1.Lectures and Tutorials
University has rooms and halls equipped with modern teaching aids like multimedia projectors and computers with Wi-Fi connectivity. The University is proud of its small group teaching methods, Tutorials, that give opportunities to develop analytical, application, presentation and communication skills of the individual students.
2.Practicals
The practical sessions are ideal testing grounds for students to apply and test the concepts taught. Modern laboratories and workshops are an integral part of the various departments of the University. The University believes in imparting strong practical exposure to the students so keeps upgrading the lab facilities to industry standards. For example, Communication Labs to improve the communication skills of the students which are equipped with the latest video and audio recording facilities,Presentations,Open house viva etc
3.Workshops, Seminars, Guest Lectures and Extension Lectures
Best industrial and corporate professionals are brought to the campus to bring the practical and application practices from the actual working environment and give extra input to the students on the current as well as specialized topics.
4.Case Studies and Group Discussions
To develop the interpersonal skills and to increase awareness of the world wide events' effects, University pays extra attention to develop the GD skills by including it as an academic activity for assessment of students like exams and test. It enables the students to relate the theory to real world situations. For this, case based and general Group Discussions are conducted.
5.Simulation
It helps to link the concepts with their applications and replicate a real world situation in a class room setting through various modes e.g role play ; software based modeling etc.
6.Presentations, Video Films and Demonstration of models, equipment and processes : To build up excellent presentation skills among students
7.Brainstorming
At LPU, it is an important pedagogical tool as it is a process for developing creative solutions to problems. It help students to generate new ideas,Explore the issue multi-dimensionally,Shoot a problem and solicit ideas, Think creatively and voice ideas without fear of criticism.
8.Open Book Test and Closing quiz
These tests make the student to apply his/her mind to analyze and synthesize the available facts in order to answer the question and help to judge students’ understanding of the course regarding practical relevance of subject matter. Also a closing quiz is conducted to enable the recapitulation and evaluation of the concepts taught in each lecture.
EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING TECHNIQUES
9.Field Trips, Internship and Tours(National and International )
Students spend time away from the university to develop skills and gain an insight into their chosen area of study. It provides a valuable opportunity to discover the realities and practices of the profession students are aiming for. Also to familiarize students with the latest in their respective domain and develop a better understanding of the world, National and international tours form an integral part of most of the courses offered in the LPU.
10.Projects and Literature Search / Surveys
Aiming at boosting the concept ‘learning by doing’,Students do various team and individual projects and surveys. Also to create a research orientation amongst students, they are made to search the literature and write a TERM PAPER, which carries credits.
11. Media Watch and Bulletin Boards
To create an awareness of the happenings in the world and to promote the creative ideas of the students, they are encouraged to keep track of the current events and paste the clippings on special boards allotted to them.
12. Web Based Learning
A number of courses across the university use web based learning materials which are very flexible and allow the students to select when such study takes place and to adjust the pace of learning with additional benefits of the web, CD ROM catalogues, desktop publishing and industry standard office software usage.
13. Student – run ventures on campus
To encourage professional orientation and entrepreneurship among the students, the students can initiate business ventures on campus. The University encourages and aids such enterprises by providing the requisite infrastructural support.
14. Career Portfolio and Simulated Interviews
In order to prepare the students to facing job interviews in a better way Career portfolio is made a part of the pedagogy in which students prepare a file depicting their interests and achievements divided into:
Academics
Co-curricular (literary, cultural sports)
Personal (hobbies, community service, institutional memberships)
Also to help students to do their own competitive analysis and find their strength and weakness, the University invites industrial professional to be a part of Simulated Interview panel and judge the students. The individual student is counseled and a recording copy is given to him for improvement.
